Taiwan Tech launches a bilingual education promotion office to support English Instruction; 16 Teachers win EMI awards!

To enhance students’ bilingual skills and global competitiveness, Taiwan Tech held the opening ceremony for its Bilingual Education Promotion Office on October 8. President Jia-Yush Yen and Vice President Jhy-Chern Liu jointly cut the ribbon, with CEO Shao-Ting Hung, Deputy Executive Director Wei-Mei Chen, and several university officials in attendance, alongside representatives from bilingual education partner organizations. The opening of this new space symbolizes Taiwan Tech's commitment and determination to promote bilingual education, laying a solid foundation for cultivating international talent.

In his speech, President Jia-Yush Yen expressed high trust in EMI teachers and hoped that Taiwan Tech's all-English instruction would align with top international universities. He acknowledged the challenges of EMI teaching, particularly the pressure it can place on some students. To address this, he suggested flexible adjustments to EMI courses to support students with weaker English skills but strong motivation, further enhancing their learning motivation and confidence.

As a key advocate for the “Bilingual Learning Program for College Students” Vice President Jhy-Chern Liu thanked the teachers, teaching assistants, and administrative staff involved in the initiative. He emphasized that their collective efforts have been vital for the successful implementation of the bilingual teaching program.

Professor Shao-Ting Hung, CEO of the Bilingual Education Promotion Office, reflected on the preparation process, noting that the team had promoted initiatives in every corner of the campus and even borrowed office space from other departments. He stated, “We finally have our own home!” and expressed gratitude to the university for providing a spacious work environment despite limited resources, allowing the bilingual education team to focus more on promotion and development. He looks forward to expanding their influence and cultivating bilingual talents with international competitiveness.

Additionally, the Bilingual Education Promotion Office showcased research results and posters related to EMI teaching, covering topics such as the development of bilingual policies and ESAP teaching research. They also screened videos on EMI teaching assistant training and experience sharing, allowing attendees to gain insights into how teaching assistants use technology and the immersive 5E learning model to enhance instruction. Many EMI teachers shared their practical experiences in optimizing EMI teaching, including the application of academic English and problem-based learning, emphasizing the integration of theory and practice to further improve student learning outcomes.

To encourage innovation and effort in EMI teaching, the Bilingual Education Promotion Office selected 16 outstanding teachers for the “Optimized EMI Teaching Techniques” award. Among them are Professor Shao-Ting Hung, Professor Yi-Hsuan Lo, and Assistant Professor An-Chi Chen from the Department of Applied Foreign Languages; Associate Professor Tzu-Chen Tang and Associate Professor Inigo Mujika from the Graduate Institute of Applied Science and Technology; Professor Wei-Chun Hsu and Associate Professor Chen-Yu Kao from the Gradaute Institute of Biomedical Engineering; Professor Huei-Wen Ferng from the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology; Professor Yu-Qian Zhu from the Department of Information Management; Assistant Professor Chien-Lung Liang from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering; Assistant Professor Shih-Hsien Tseng and Assistant Professor Yu-Ling Hsu from the Department of Industrial Management; Assistant Professor Duc-Thang Vo from the College of Engineering; Assistant Professor Fu-Hsuan Yeh from the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering; Assistant Professor Wei-Wen Hsiao from the Department of Chemical Engineering; and Assistant Professor Yi-Jia Lin from non-major deparment. These educators are injecting new vitality into EMI teaching through innovative strategies, promoting the sustainable development of bilingual education at Taiwan Tech.
