Taiwan Tech wins third place worldwide in WTUN Student Competition with feminine hygiene innovation.

A team of Taiwan Tech students participated in the World Technology Universities Network (WTUN) Student Competition and proposed the “Let it go, Let it flow” online feminine hygiene product inquiry and sharing app to help women instantly check where they can get sanitary products. They were also encouraged to give back the same amount of sanitary products after obtaining them, achieving the goal of mutual aid and reciprocity, winning the favor of the judges and winning third place.

Chih-Yu Yeh and Pin-Ruei Huang, junior students in the Department of Applied Foreign Languages at Taiwan Tech, first participated in the “2024 Third Taiwan Tech SDGs English Presentation Competition”. They selected SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 (Quality Education) among the five United Nations Sustainable Development Goals chosen for the competition. Motivated by women's health and the campus environment, they combined their own and their friends’ life experiences to develop a topic centered around women's menstrual health.

During their discussions, Chih-Yu Yeh and Pin-Ruei Huang discovered a gender disparity on campus where restrooms provided or sold toilet paper and even condom vending machines, but lacked availability of female hygiene products. This observation led them to focus their discussions on the topic of women's hygiene products. While preparing for the English presentation competition and making their slides, they found previous efforts on campus related to this issue that were not sustained, motivating them to advocate for women's needs. The two decided to speak out for women. After many discussions and rehearsals during the competition, combined with appropriate clothing and gestures, they presented their case during the campus English presentation competition finals and won second place on March 28.

Following their success, they received encouragement from the leader of the Language Center Chih-Kai Lin to participate in this year's “World Technology Universities Network Student Competition”. After consulting with professional English instructors, they reformatted their presentation into a three-minute video, integrating their achievements into dual sustainable development goals. Starting from their personal experiences, they discussed regional socioeconomic challenges from a technological standpoint, proposing the “Let it go, Let it flow” women's hygiene product inquiry and sharing app project to promote gender equality and sustainability, earning them third place. The students hope their international competition success will raise awareness among students of all genders about gender equality issues. They aspire for their platform to extend beyond campus into society and globally, aiming to enhance female well-being and achieve gender equality.
