The Minister of Education, Pan Wen-Chung, stated that today marks a historic moment for vocational education in Taiwan. He expressed special gratitude to the Huaxia Board for their selfless decision to agree on the integration and merger of Huaxia Tech with Taiwan Tech, which sets a pioneering example as the first integration between public and private technological universities. The establishment of Taiwan Tech and Huaxia Tech encompasses the trajectory of Taiwan's economic development and the entire vocational education system. Huaxia Tech, originally named “Huaxia Agricultural Junior College”, went through various stages of development, including being recognized as an agricultural college, technical college, and institute of technology, before finally being restructured as “Huaxia University Foundation, Huaxia University of Science and Technology” in 2014. On the other hand, Taiwan Tech, founded in 1974, was the first institution to pioneer technical education, named National Taiwan Institute of Technology. In 1997, it was renamed National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech), positioned as the second national road of higher education.
On August 1st, Taiwan Tech held the inauguration ceremony for the Huaxia Campus, with a speech delivered by Minister of Education, Wen-Chung Pan.
Minister Wen-Chung Pan expressed his pleasure in witnessing the establishment of key research centers at Taiwan Tech's Huaxia Campus, focusing on areas such as "Sustainable Electrochemical Energy Development," "Heterogeneous Integrated Silicon Photovoltaic Chip Research," "Smart Manufacturing Innovation," and "Vocational Empowerment Studies." Additionally, the Ministry of Education has approved the "Smart Electric Vehicle Talent Cultivation Base" project, collaboratively developed by Taiwan Tech and seven esteemed partner schools, including National Taiwan Normal University, Ming Chi University of Technology, Chung Hua University, National Formosa University, Shu-Te University, and National Pingtung University of Science and Technology. The Ministry of Education will support Taiwan Tech in establishing an electric vehicle base at the Huaxia Campus, therefore solidifying its status as a hub for research and talent cultivation.
President of Taiwan Tech, Jia-Yush Yen, expressed profound gratitude to the selflessness of the Huaxia Tech board and the invaluable assistance from the Ministry of Education. He also acknowledged the unwavering support from esteemed alumni and the flexibility in handling various regulatory restrictions, which allowed the successful completion of the merger. Both institutions emphasize practicality and complement each other's strengths. This momentous occasion marks the beginning of a collaborative journey, not the result. Moving forward, they will foster partnerships with local industries and academic counterparts, sustaining the consolidation of resources and working together to create a milestone in vocational education.
In his speech, President of Taiwan Tech, Jia-Yush Yen, expressed his thoughts on the momentous occasion.
Chairman of the Huaxia Board, San-Qi Liu, delivered his address, stating that the Huaxia Board serves as a supervisor of public welfare directors, with a strong educational foundation spanning 60 years, making it a distinguished institution dedicated to charitable development in education. Moving forward, the faculties of both institutions are poised to become mutually beneficial partners, and Taiwan Tech is committed to offering credit courses to Huaxia students, providing access to educational and research resources for Huaxia faculty and students. It’s his pleasure to see the collaborative effort between public and private technical institutions serve as a model for future cooperation in vocational education.
The chairman of Huaxia University of Science and Technology, San-Qi Liu, delivered a speech.
During the 112th academic year, nearly 40 faculty and staff members from Huaxia University of Science and Technology have been transferred to Taiwan Tech. The collaboration between our two institutions has already resulted in a cohesive and integrated team. Taiwan Tech will leverage the strengths of both universities to deepen industrial linkages, capitalize on the synergies arising from the integration, and continue the vision of "breaking limitations and moving towards infinity," thereby creating new value in the field of technology and vocational education.
The "Taiwan Tech Star Entrepreneurial Investment Company," jointly funded by Taiwan Tech alumni, has acquired a TOYOTA medium-sized bus. On this momentous occasion of the establishment of the "Taiwan Tech Huaxia Campus," Mr. Yong-Shun Zhuang, Chairman of Winbond Electronics Corporation, and Mr. Yu-Wen Wu, Vice Chairman of the Alumni Association, represented the donors in presenting the bus to Taiwan Tech. This contribution will enhance the efficiency and convenience of transportation between the campuses, benefiting both students and faculty.
Taiwan Tech places a strong emphasis on practical research and its application, focusing on the value of industry-academia collaboration. In the second phase of the Higher Education Deep Cultivation Project, Taiwan Tech received a substantial subsidy of 425 million NTD, the highest among all technological and vocational colleges. The establishment of six specialized research centers and the successful approval of all five types of USR (University Social Responsibility) projects have further validated Taiwan Tech's commitment to excellence. In a nationwide survey on USR conducted for five consecutive years (from 2019 to 2023), Taiwan Tech has proudly held the top position among public technological and vocational universities. These remarkable achievements were highlighted and introduced during today's inauguration ceremony of the "Taiwan Tech Huaxia Campus."
Both Taiwan Tech and Huaxia University of Science and Technology belong to the technical and vocational education system and are geographically close to each other. In April 2023, both institutions convened meetings at the school level and approved the integration plan. On May 18, the Ministry of Education officially approved the merger, and the respective boards of Taiwan Tech and Huaxia University of Science and Technology, along with Huaxia University of Science and Technology itself, completed the tripartite merger agreement on July 24.
Starting from the 112th academic year, Huaxia University of Science and Technology has stopped admissions and is projected to cease operations after the conclusion of the 115th academic year. Following the dissolution and liquidation, the remaining school assets will be donated to Taiwan Tech. During the transitional period, Taiwan Tech will use the Zhonghe Campus in New Taipei City through a gratuitous arrangement, while the faculty and staff of Huaxia University of Science and Technology will be gradually transferred to Taiwan Tech.
