The 2024 Open RAN Summit, hosted by Taiwan Tech and Industrial Technology Research Institute, kicks off on June 17th at Taiwan Tech. Telecom experts from 8 countries including the USA, Japan, Germany, France, Finland, Singapore, and the UAE will discuss “Open RAN and 6G” and “Open RAN and Open Source”. Topics include O-RAN standards, 6G communication technology, 5G system software, private 5G networks, and telecom AI applications. Over 30 specialists gathered on site, attracting the enthusiastic participation of more than 300 global industry, government, and academic professionals from all over the world.

During the opening ceremony, Dr. Pang-An Ting, Director of the Information and Communications Institute at ITRI, emphasized Taiwan has adopted a pragmatic and innovative approach towards advancing to 6G. He underscored the nation's comprehensive 5G Open RAN ecosystem, highlighting its potential to significantly boost global Open RAN industry development. Additionally, the Information and Communications Institute continues to explore forward-looking technologies within the framework of Open RAN, paving the way for 6G advancements.

Vice President Shun-Feng Su of Taiwan Tech expressed that this forum represents a collective effort of many entities. Domestic and foreign telecom operators shared their experiences in O-RAN system verification and deployment. He believes this exchange will bring new insights and breakthroughs to the Open RAN field, creating new opportunities for industry advancement.

In addition to keynote speeches, the forum also features 18 booths showcasing O-RAN systems and testing solutions from prominent companies and institutions including ITRI, Compal, Pegatron, Wistron NeWeb Corp, Metanoia Communications Inc., Auden Techno Corp, Auray, LitePoint, Anritsu, VIAVI, Keysight, Taiwan Tech, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, EURECOM, and SUTD.

The Open Base Station Summit continues until the 18th, featuring Dr. Alex Jinsung Choi, Chairman of the O-RAN Alliance and Senior Vice President of Deutsche Telekom, and Dr. Sadayuki Abeta, Global Open RAN Leader at NTT DOCOMO of Japan, discussing the current status, future developments of the O-RAN Alliance, and the competitiveness and sustainability of Open RAN. Following them, Ayush Sharma, Chief Technology Officer of Singapore's StarHub telecom operator, shared insights on industrializing O-RAN through enterprise deployment.
Additionally, Professor Binbin Chen from the Singapore University of Technology and Design led a panel discussion with representatives from NTT DOCOMO, Orange, QCT, WNC, Keysight, and Auray, exploring the sustainable development momentum of the Open RAN system. The first day's talks triggered extensive discussions among attendees, offering valuable insights into Taiwan's industry development in the Open RAN domain. The forum on June 18 will delve into the progress of O-RAN technology, advancements and challenges in O-RAN software communities, and the application of generative AI in O-RAN.
During the panel discussion sessions, participants engaged in online Q&A sessions, fostering communication and interaction.
Co-organizers Professor Navid Nikaein from EURECOM, France, and Professor Tony Quek from Singapore University of Technology and Design, have both highly praised Taiwan's achievements in the field of Open RAN. They also expressed gratitude for the forum providing them and the broader community with the opportunity to engage in in-depth discussions and exchange views.
This conference facilitated extensive exchanges between international experts and dozens of Taiwanese businesses, aligning Taiwan with global developments and providing access to the latest industry technologies. It has become the best communication platform for Open RAN in Taiwan, fostering new opportunities across various sectors in the country.
